| It is the nature of coaching that certain athletes provide a level of
frustration, and Dante is probably doing that to Bama’s staff. The nephew
of former Alabama basketball great Leon Douglas has had some
success, but is not headed in the right direction. Dante was a starter in
his first Alabama game as a true freshman in 1999 and started every
game in the SEC championship season, at right tackle until the Orange
Bowl when he moved to left tackle. He also started every game as Bama
slumped to 3-8 in his sophomore season in 2000. He also started the
first three games last year, then was dropped to little-used back-up
status. His star fell a little further when he was academically ineligible for
the Independence Bowl. This season Ellington is sitting out and working on the scout team due to academics, but he plans to return in 2003 as a redshirt senior.
