| If there is a more athletic punter in the conference, Bearden hasn't met him. Lane came to Bama known primarily as Tyler Watts’
favorite receiver in high school. After being redshirted in 1998 he was the
kickoff man in 1999 with opponents averaging starting on their 18. In 2000
he switched to punter and averaged 41.4 yards per punt with one blocked.
Last year he handled both punting and kickoff duties. He averaged 39.6
yards per punt and 17 of his 50 kicks were downed inside the opponents’
20. He is more than just a kicker. He had six tackles on kickoffs last year
and also took care of a cheap-shot artist trying to blindside him at South
Carolina.
