| Although Hirchel started every game last year, he was playing with a
handicap. It was not revealed until the end of the season when he
underwent surgery that he had played with a separated shoulder. He has
also had off-season knee surgery, but is expected to be able to play this
year. An outstanding athlete who was once considered for wide receiver,
he was a much-utilized back-up in his first two seasons. Last year he had
48 tackles, broke up 10 passes and recovered a fumble. However, he has
never intercepted a pass. He won the “Bobby Johns Most Improved
Defensive Back Award” in 2000 and shared it in 1999. He is an
outstanding weight-lifter.
