| A quarterback capable of beating teams with his legs or his arm, Brandon
Avalos chose the Crimson Tide over Virginia Tech, Purdue, Nebraska and
Southern Miss. Avalos possesses the speed one would expect from a
former wide receiver (4.55 in the 40) and surprising strength for a player of
his size. The 187-pounder bench presses 290 and squats 500. As a junior in high school, he switched from receiver to
quarterback and recorded 1,578 yards of total offense (1,120 passing,
458 rushing) and established himself as a double-threat quarterback,
throwing for eight touchdowns and running for seven more. "That's one
reason we like Brandon; he's very versatile," Franchione said. "He can
run. He can throw. He's athletic. Those were his big plusses." As a senior,
he added 1,306 yards of offense and 12 total touchdowns. Barring several injuries, Avalos will redshirt in 2002. |
