Alabama Up To First In Coaches Poll

It looks like the sportswriters and broadcasters are more traditional and the coaches more “eye test” when it comes to the weekly college football polls. Both, though, have the same top four teams, which is what counts in this inaugural season of the College Football Playoff.

Slow Start This Week Could Be Disastrous

Two Southeastern Conference teams facing cupcake opposition had slow starts on Saturday – Alabama against Western Carolina and Auburn against Samford. Coincidence? Probably not.

Tide Men’s Basketball Faces Iowa State

One can just hear coaches at Iowa State, Maryland, and Arizona State preparing their pre-game analysis of the Alabama men’s basketball team. Coachspeak of a team that was bad the previous year is always that “They are a very improved team.”

Tide Women Win Three In Three Days

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Sophomore Ashley Williams and freshman Hannah Cook combined for 33 points to lead the Alabama women’s basketball team to a 58-51 victory over Temple in the Hall of Fame Women’s Challenge at Allen Fieldhouse on Sunday. The win was the third in three days for the Crimson Tide at the tournament, which lifts UA’s season record to 4-2, while the loss drops the Owls to 2-3.

Win Best Thing About Playing Catamounts

One of the few good things about Alabama playing a team like Western Carolina is that players who don’t get much playing time are able to get some snaps. One of the problems Saturday was that back-up players were getting in early because Crimson Tide starters were getting hurt against the Catamounts.

Now The Story Changes To Auburn Game

Shortly after No.1 Alabama dispatched homecoming opponent Western Carolina 48-14 at Bryant-Denny Stadium, talk in the postgame turned to next week’s opponent: Auburn. Unlike Tide fans, Alabama players don’t discuss the Tigers every day of the year. Like Alabama fans, junior All-America safety Landon Collins can’t forget last year’s last-second defeat at Jordan Hare. ESPN won’t let him.

Friday Night Lights Has Some Stories

Friday Night Lights Has Some Stories

GARDENDALE –A special story and a special player intersected in round three of the 2014 AHSAA 6A playoffs Friday night. Both the story and player involve The University of Alabama football program; one its past and the other its future. The football game was won by Florence, which topped Gardendale 49-14, and the Falcons will visit Clay-Chalkville in the semis next week. To the categories:

Alabama Volleyball Rolls Over Auburn

Alabama Volleyball Rolls Over Auburn

With the match split at 1-1 at intermission, Alabama came out with two strong sets to beat Auburn, 3-1, Friday at Foster Auditorium to improve to 23-6 overall and 11-4 in SEC play. With the loss, Auburn falls to 12-16 overall and 4-11 in SEC play.

Not Many High-Profile Games In SEC

Although there are important games this week (and as Gene Stallings famously said, “If you don’t think a game is big, just lose it”) it is in no small measure a game of cupcakes. There are only six games that Las Vegas doesn’t have a line for this week and four of them involve Southeastern Conference games.

Fine Shooting Gets Tide Over Eagles

Alabama wasn’t going to keep up its torrid early game scoring pace – the Crimson Tide made its first nine shots – but Levi Randolph was hot in the first half and Ricky Tarrant in the second half as Bama rolled to an 81-67 win over Southern Miss in Coleman Coliseum Thursday night.

Tide Hosts Rebuilding Southern Miss

Talk about your rebuilding jobs, Southern Miss went 29-7 last year, tied for 10th in the nation in number of wins with teams like Kentucky, Gonzaga, Villanova, and Michigan State. One problem, though. The Golden Eagles lost all their starters and their coach from that squad.

Tide Can Win Its Way Into The Playoff

It has happened to anyone who has ever been in a meeting, from the PTA to RCA. The subject is widgets, which is tough enough to get a handle on, and someone brings up thingamajigs, sending the conversation on a tangent that soon becomes the focus.
