Okay, for starters: No, D.J. Fluker does not get his shoes at the clown uniform store. But he does…
2010 Candidates At Right Tackle
Those fans are extremely interested, though, in what player will win the starting job to be the Alabama right tackle in 2010.
The Crimson Tide had problems at the position for several seasons until Mike Johnson in 2007 and Drew Davis the past two years stepped up. Johnson moved to left guard when Davis showed he could handle the job at right tackle. Now, both Johnson and Davis have graduated.
One of the most intriguing Alabama football players came out of spring drills as the number one right tackle. D.J. Fluker, the 6-6 redshirt freshman, has reportedly lost a lot of weight and is down in the 340-pound range. Fluker, who was a defensive lineman until his senior year in high school at Foley, has been considered by some as a likely college football star, others as over-rated.
We're betting on the star designation.
Although he had some troubles with the likes of Dont'a Hightower in the A-Day Game, Fluker also showed some very good blocking ability on run plays. It would be expected that he would be behind on pass blocking. Most college tackles take a while to get proficient in that important duty.
But Fluker did exhibit athletic ability. And the fact that he was number one in the spring is evidence of the expectations Coach Nick Saban and Assistant Coach Joe Pendry have for him.
Alfred McCullough (6-2, 309, junior) appeared to be the number two tackle at both left and right during the spring. The former defensive end was also back-up at both tackle spots as a sophomore and it wouldn't be a shock to see him as the starter at right tackle this season.
Sophomore David Williams (6-3, 267) also spent time at right tackle in the spring. Taylor Love (6-6, 304 junior) is a left tackle, but Pendry is known for moving his offensive linemen around.
