Going into the first meet of her junior season, Alabama gymnast Jeana Rice wasn't as good as she was at the end of last season, she was better.

The Longwood, Fla. native posted a career best 39.700 in the all-around on the way to winning that event and two others at the season opening Super Six Challenge last Saturday in Athens, Ga.

In recognition of the All-American's standout performance to open the season, the Southeastern Conference named Rice the SEC Gymnast of the Week.

"I am extremely proud of the way Jeana has started this season," Alabama head coach Sarah Patterson said. "I've said again and again, that she was ready to compete before Thanksgiving and I think that showed Saturday. She is very deserving of this honor."

In addition to winning the all-around against gymnasts from Georgia, Florida, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Penn State, Rice also won the uneven bars and balance beam.

In the national rankings, which came out yesterday, Rice is second in the all-around and uneven bars, fifth on the balance beam, seventh on the vault and 18th on the floor exercise.

Rice and the No. 9 Crimson Tide return to action Saturday, again in Athens, Ga., in a dual meet against No. 2 ranked Georgia.
