Greenwood Named Top Defensive Lineman
Bobby Greenwood

Alabama football opponents can’t be too thrilled to be working up weekly offensive game plans to go against the Crimson Tide defense. Although it’s called a 3-4, the Bama defense is about as multiple as it gets.
Recently the
Alabama
defense has been shifting senior defensive end
Bobby Greenwood
to a position that looks more like nose tackle than end when opponents are in passing situations. In Alabama’s 17-14 win over
Kentucky
last weekend, that was a winning position.
On Monday the Southeastern Conference announced that Greenwood had been named the SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week.
Greenwood had three total tackles, plus a sack, a pass deflection, and a quarterback pressure. The Tide allowed Kentucky just 35 rushing yards on 20 attempts with no carry over eight yards. Greenwood’s sack came in the first quarter for a loss of six yards on a third down play, forcing a Wildcats’ punt.
Alabama leads the SEC and ranks second in the nation in rush defense (50.8 ypg).
In six games this season, Greenwood has 10 tackles, three quarterback pressures, one quarterback sack and one pass break-up for the Crimson Tide.
Also earning honorable mention recognition for an excellent game was Alabama tailback
Glen Coffee
, who rushed 245 times for 218 yards, sixth best total in Alabama football history, with two touchdowns.
Other Player of the Week citations from the SEC were:
Offense to
South Carolina
quarterback
Chris Smelley
, Defense to
Vanderbilt
linebacker
Patrick Benoist
, Special Teams to Vanderbilt punter
Brett Upson
, Offensive Lineman
Maurkice Pouncey
of
Florida
, and Freshman Florida running back Jeffrey Demps.
