Mark Gottfried Named To Coaches' Board

Alabama Basketball Coach Mark Gottfried has been elected to the board of directors of the National Association of Basketball Coaches. The NABC announced the appointment on Tuesday morning.

“I view this as an honor and certainly a privilege,” said Mark Gottfried who is in his 11th season at Alabama and has coached his alma mater to the 2002 Southeastern Conference championship and the 2004 NCAA Elite 8, among other program successes. “I told (NABC Executive Director) Jim Haney that I will treat it as such. I’m very excited about my opportunity to serve and want to contribute to our profession in any way possible.”

Gottfried, the 2002 SEC Coach of the Year, has been active in the NABC, serving on rules committees and other areas in the past. The veteran coach was head coach at Murray State for three seasons prior to taking the Alabama job in March of 1998. He was an assistant coach at UCLA for seven seasons, including its 1995 NCAA Championship season.

Gottfried is also on the John Wooden Award Board of Governors.

Also named as a new member of the NABC board is South Carolina State Coach Tim Carter.

“We are very pleased and fortunate to have Tim Carter and Mark Gottfried join our board of directors,” said NABC President Tubby Smith of the University of Minnesota in a release sent out by the NABC Tuesday. “Both have been strong advocates for our game and I’m looking forward to working with them.”
