Ivan Matchett, Scout.com three-star running back from Mobile-St. Paul, Ala., took his official visit…
"I fell in love with the place."
5-10, 205, RB
St. Paul's Episcopal (Mobile)
Scout.com three-star recruit
Why Alabama?: "The reason I committed early was because there was no reason to wait around. I could go where I wanted to go. The coaches are real cool. I love the campus. I fell in love with the place," Matchett said.
On coach Nick Saban as a recruiter: "I could call him anytime I ever had any questions."
Coach Mike Bates: "Ivan has been a leader of our team for a long time. He's an extremely hard runner. I think he has great vision as a running back. He catches the ball well out of the backfield. So he brings a lot more to the table than being able to run the football."
"He's very personable. All of our kids like Ivan a lot. He was voted Team Captain his senior year. He's got a lot of good qualities that you look for in a young man and a football player."
"I think his toughness running the football [what the Tide staff likes]. He gets a lot of yards after contact. He gets an awful lot of them."
"I think the tradition and what he [Matchett] expects them to be in the future. I think he expects a lot of things, and they are going to be better and he wants to be a part of that I think."
"Yes, they are friends [Matchett, Hood, Barron]. I mean where you see one of them you don't always see all of them, but they are friends. There's not any jealousy or anything like that between them. I wouldn't say they are always together."
Bio: Matchett was awarded ASWA All-State first team and listed on the Press Register's Elite 18 for his senior season and named Team Captain. He had 230 attempts for 2,059 yards 25 touchdowns (8.95 yards per carry and 137.27 yards per game) for his senior year.
Matchett rushed for 1,416 yards on 189 carries and scored 22 touchdowns during his junior campaign. He was an ASWA Class 5A honorable mention All-State selection for his performance.
Analysis: Matchett is a powerful runner with a stocky frame and uses his lower body very well while running in the hole. Matchett is very explosive when he finds some daylight, and has good vision to get a cutback lane. He has good balance, good yards after first contact, and can find the corner pretty well.
