Stadium Plaza Statues Unveiled

Coach Gene Stallings speaks at statue dedication.

Head Coach of the 1992 Alabama national championship team Gene Stallings and family representatives of all four of Alabama's national championship coaches were present Thursday afternoon for the unveiling of statues of those coaches likeness on the plaza outside Bryant-Denny Stadium's north end zone.

Alabama Director of Athletics Mal Moore and Stallings spoke at the unveiling ceremony outside the stadium before a private reception inside the stadium on Thursday afternoon.

The statues of Stallings, Paul Bryant, Frank Thomas and Wallace Wade are the crown jewels of the new plaza outside the north end zone of Byrant-Denny Stadium. Each statue is set apart by a curved wall with the coaches name and year listed.

The plaza gives Bryant-Denny Stadium a grand entrance from University Boulevard.

"We needed a front door and a presence for the stadium on University Boulevard," Moore said.

Stallings, who addressed the crowd on behalf of the national champion coaches and their families, said, "Trying to speak on behalf of these other coaches is practically impossible."

Stallings went on to thank assistant coaches and all the team support staff before saying, "One thing we can't forget is that the game is for the players, and I think these three coaches would certainly feel the same way."

Alabama Head Coach Mike Shula said the statues and the plaza were, "a great show of appreciation and a celebration of what people have done for this University.

"Personally, what people have done for us as a team, and everything they have given us has been awesome."
