Scout Combine: Notes and Photos
Decatur's Rolondo McClain

Attending the Tuscaloosa Scout.com combine was a thoroughly impressive experience.

The organization and efficiency of the entire Scout.com staff was first rate, and the coaches who gave their time to conduct testing and drills were superb. The 250-plus players in attendance move through the process easily and the coaches working with the players weren't fazed by the large groups they worked with.

At the risk of repeating names that have already been mentioned in coverage on this site and elsewhere on Scout.com, there were a few eye-catching players at Saturday's combine. High among those were Decatur running back Rolando McClain, Hewitt-Trussville running back Rico Sharpe, Pacelli Catholic quarterback DeRon Furr, Jeff Davis cornerback William Spight, UMS-Wright receiver Terrell Edwards and Benjamin Russell linebacker Eltoro Freeman.

Terrell Edwards runs the 40.

Eltoro Freeman was impressive at linebacker during one-on-one drills.

Most of my afternoon was spent watching receivers versus defensive backs. Buckhorn receiver Lydarius Friend (6-4, 205 pounds) showed good hands, consistently catching tough passes in indvidual route-running drills.

Loachapoka receiver Johnny Williams made what was probably the catch of the day early in the one-on-one drills, sprinting past Spight down the left sideline and laying to full extention to make the catch.

B.C. Rain cornerback Ryan Williams and Huffman's Christian Smith had a physical battle in one-on-ones, with Williams getting a nice jam in before Smith cut in to catch a short slant pass.

Christian Smith, the younger brother of Alabama signee Andre Smith, worked out at receiver Saturday.

Elliot McGaskin had a pass break-up on a pass attempt to Friend, and Harrison Central (Mississippi) safety Le'Marcus Gibson had an interception after a physical jam at the line of scrimmage in bump-and-run coverage.

Murphy receiver William Bjorkland got past Starkville defensive back Jeremy Vaughn on one play, and Fairfield receiver Justin Davis had a nice catch over Parker's Deonte Flemings.

Vincent Byron, from Erwin had a nice jam and a good reaction once the ball was in the air.

Quarterback Chris Relf, of Carver-Montgomery had a quick release and a strong arm, and Kyle Pennington, a 5-11, 165-pound athletic quarterback might have had the strongest arm at the combine.

Here are some other photos from Saturday's combine:

Brantley linebacker Jeffrey Daniels runs the 40. He is from the same high school as current Alabama linebacker Marcel Stamps.
