Derek Knight ran a very respectable 4.6 40-yard dash and he also shined in individual drills and competition drills as well in the Alamo Dome. Several schools have been in contact with Knight and we caught up with his coach today.
"Derek in my mind is one of the best players in the state of Michigan." Said Renaissance assistant coach Antoine Edwards, "I'll put Derek up against anyone, we've had a lot of schools come through and look at him including Michigan, Michigan State, Miami, Iowa and Illinois.
"I don't know how Alabama found about Derek but they called and saw his highlight tape and loved it. Boston College said they are going to recruit him very hard. We've had a lot of very good prospects come out of Renaissance including Ronald Talley (Notre Dame) and Carson Butler (Michigan) and Derek is right up there with those guys.
"Derek Knight will be the only young man in the history of Renaissance to be a three-year varsity captain. That should tell you a little about what we think of him as a leader, football player and person. Derek will also be a two-time captain of our track team."
Knight had a tremendous junior season racking up 128 tackles, 11 sacks, five forced fumbles and two interceptions that were run back for touchdowns. Renaissance also has a reputation for being a very good academic institution and Knight carries a 3.1 GPA in the classroom.
We'll have comments from Derek Knight as well as highlight footage from his junior season in the very near future.
