Justin Jonus quits Tide basketball team

Posted Jan 23, 2006

Justin Jonus, a sophomore guard on the Alabama men's basketball team, has withdrawn from school, further decimating an already thin squad.

“I am disappointed in Justin’s decision and certainly the timing of this decision being that it is January 23,” said Alabama Coach Mark Gottfried. “I have expressed to Justin and his father that he still could be a player that helps this team reach the NCAA tournament. He has told me his decision is based on the recent lack of playing time, specifically the last four games. This choice leaves us with only seven scholarship players.”

Justin Jonus has played in 14 of Alabama’s 17 games, starting in five games and averaging 20.9 minutes and 5.9 points a game.

Prior to withdrawing from school on Monday, the Boaz native was on track to graduate from Alabama in December 2006.
