Jennings' life different, post pledge

Committing to any school is a milestone in an athlete’s life, it means you have a scholarship offer and the staff thinks so much of you that you pencil your name in to sign when it’s time. But for Alabama commitments, several things come with the label. BamaMag checked out Anfernee Jennings in action and he details some of them inside.

Dadeville (Ala.) kicked off its 2014 campaign with an exhibition win over Piedmont (Ala.) High, 14-8, Saturday at the Champions Challenge in Montgomery.

The stars each shined on both sides, especially when talking Alabama commitment Anfernee Jennings. He led his defense to a dominant showing, giving up the score on one busted play, in what could be a preview of one of the better units in the area.

“We’re going to have a good season, we got the first game jitters out of the way and we fought well,” he said. “Things cooled down in the second half and things went our way.”

A three-star prospect on Scout.com, Jennings admitted that there were some new challenges he faced on the field. It was just his second showing as a Nick Saban pledge, and first since the team’s spring game in May.

“It was all that, I’ll get through it. I guess they expect so much from me since I’m a ‘Bama commit,” he said. “I did my part. There’s going to be a big target on your back, downfield they were trying to peel back (block) on me, so I had to watch that.”

The game was a microcosm of everyday life for the 6-foot-3, 260-pounder since making the decision to Roll Tide in March.

“Everybody refers to me as a ‘Bama commit, everywhere I go,” Jennings said. “I’ve got a big responsibility; I’ve got to be respectful. I’ve got to watch what I do, everybody is watching me.

“I’ve had my fair share of moments, sometimes I like it, sometimes I have to deal with it. I’m a ‘Bama commit, if you chose this, you did your part and I understand what comes with it.”

Despite the in-state pledge, the senior estimates that 15 additional programs continue to actively recruit him, though he doesn’t have any future visits planned.
