Tide Depth Chart Has No Great Surprises

Blake Sims

As expected, Alabama Coach Nick Saban presented the pre-season depth chart to sports reporters Monday. And, also as expected, he told us it didn’t mean much. The most anticipated starter is the quarterback, but it was no surprise that the depth chart didn’t answer that question.

To get immediately to the crux, under “Quarterback,” Alabama Coach Nick Saban listed the two candidates on the first team line. For what it’s worth, senior Blake Sims was listed first and junior transfer Jake Coker was listed second; but both on that first team line.

The closest thing to a surprise came at nose guard, where A'Shawn Robinson was listed first, followed by Darren Lake and Brandon Ivory on the second team, and freshman Joshua Frazier.

Robinson, who played primarily at defensive end last year, has missed work with a knee injury. Ivory, who started last year at nose tackle, missed early practice time as he was suspended for an off-the-field transgression.

Later Saban explained that personnel may be used in different ways depending on the competition.

Neither of the talented freshmen cornerback candidates made it to first team on the depth chart. Cyrus Jones is listed at first team cornerback with Tony Brown and Eddie Jackson co-number twos. At the other cornerback spot, Bradley Sylve is first with Maurice Smith and Marlon Humphrey on the second line. Brown and Humphrey are not only highly-ranked freshmen cornerbacks, but also outstanding track athletes.

Landon Collins is at the strong safety spot with Nick Perry and Geno Smith sharing the free safety position.

Reuben Foster was listed on the first line at both inside linebacker spots, with Trey DePriest at middle linebacker and with Reggie Ragland at weakside linebacker.

It was no surprise that Brian Vogler and O.J. Howard were both listed as No. 1 at tight end. It was a bit of a surprise that Dakota Ball, who moved from defensive line during fall camp, was on the second line at tight end.

Here is the depth chart issued by Alabama Monday with more than one at some positions:
