Tide's Webb SEC Freshman Of Week
Alabama got a two-run double from Webb in the top of the ninth inning in College Station, Texas, Saturday evening to give Bama a 6-4 win over Texas A&M and also give the Crimson Tide the series with two wins in the three games. Webb started all four games for Alabama last week, posting a .417 average.
Webb, a 5-11, 190-pound native of Phenix City, had at least one hit in all four games last week and scored three runs.
Hitting ninth in the order, Webb hit .444 (4-for-9) with two RBI and three runs scored in the Texas A&M series. He also had four sacrifice bunts that produced three runs for the Tide, including two against UL-Monroe and the eventual game-winning run in game one at Texas A&M. For the season, Webb is hitting .313, which ranks second on the team.
Alabama's two wins against Texas A&M gave the Crimson Tide its first road series win of the season. Bama is now 22-9 overall and 8-4 in SEC play, leading the league. In addition to the A&M series, Bama defeated Louisiana-Monroe, 3-2. Bama had a 5-1 win over the Aggies to start the series in College Station, then split a doubleheader on Saturday, falling 13-8 before winning 6-4.
Kentucky's A.J. Reed was named the SEC Player of the Week, while Arkansas' Jalen Beeks and Chris Oliver and LSU's Aaron Nola shared conference pitcher of the week honors.
Webb and the Tide will return to action at 6 p.m. CDT Tuesday hosting UAB at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. This weekend's SEC series has Bama hosting Auburn Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Alabama had impressive nominees for SEC Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week.
Chance Vincent, a 6-3, 205-pound third baseman from Scott, La., batted .462 (6-for-13) in the four games, which included a .556 (5-for-9) series against Texas A&M. He had a team-high four RBI, all coming in the Texas A&M series, with a team-high four runs scored, including scoring the winning run in both victories over the Aggies.
Thomas Burrows, a 6-1, 230-pound freshman pitcher from Florence, got the save over Monroe and in the series finale against Texas A&M. In three games in relief he pitched three innings and retired all nine batters he faced. For the year he has a 1.00 earned run average in 18 innings pitched and is holding opponents to a .107 batting average, having surrendered just six hits and two runs on the season.
One incredible streak came to an end for Bama at A&M. When the Tide lost 13-8 it marked the only time this year Alabama has not won when scoring at least three runs. The Tide is 22-1 in games in which Bama has scored at least three.
The 13 runs scored by Texas A&M is the most allowed by Alabama pitching this year, and the most since allowing 14 to number one ranked Vanderbilt last year.
Alabama's 22-9 record is the best 31-game mark for the Tide since 2006.
