Traina Selected Pitcher Of Week
Traina was selected as SEC Pitcher of the Week for her performance last weekend, and it's likely the award ranks higher than expected on her list of achievements. Traina pitched two complete game victories as Alabama won its first series over Florida in Gainesville since 2005.
Traina, a native of Naples, Fla., went 2-0 against the top-ranked Gators. On Friday, she allowed just two runs, one earned, and two hits as Alabama won 4-2. In Sunday's rubber match, Traina pitched one of her finest performances of the season, throwing a complete-game shutout with just two hits allowed, both of which came in the first two innings. The two hits allowed in each game are a season low for Florida, who had lost just two games before this weekend.
Traina has an 11-2 record with a 1.84 ERA. She has allowed just 23 earned runs and has struck out 99 batters, averaging 1.13 strikeouts per innings pitched and holding a 2.54 strikeout to base on balls ratio. Against ranked teams this season, Traina is 3-1 with just three earned runs over 27 innings pitched.
With the series win, Alabama holds on to the top spot in the SEC standings with a 27-5 overall record and 8-1 conference record. The series was the first the Gators had lost to any SEC team since 2012, when Alabama defeated them in the final weekend of the regular season.
Alabama leads the SEC in conference-only games in runs (66), hits (80), RBI (61), home runs (11), total bases (124), walks (43), stolen bases (16) and opposing batting average (.185).
Alabama has won nine of its last 10 games and all three of its SEC series – going 3-0 against both South Carolina and Ole Miss and 2-1 vs. Florida. Alabama is now 32-26 vs. Florida all-time.
Alabama was ranked seventh in the nation in one poll and ninth in the other last week before downing Florida, which had been first in one poll, second in the other.
This is the first weekly conference honor for Alabama this season and the first Pitcher of the Week honor since Traina won it on April 9, 2012. The SEC Player of the Week was Tennessee senior Madison Shipman, while the Freshman of the Week was Texas A&M's Abby Donnell.
Alabama had some worthy "player of the week" nominees in addition to Traina.
Leona Lafaele (sophomore infielder from Sacramento, Calif.) and Jadyn Spencer (junior utility player from Waterloo, Iowa) each went 5-10 against Florida with three RBI. Spencer hit two solo home runs over the weekend and two doubles while Lafaele blasted a three-run homer in Sunday's win.
Senior infielder Kaila Hunt of Evans, Ga., had three RBI over the weekend, pushing her career total to 198 and moving her into second place all-time at Bama, trailing only Charlotte Morgan (2007-10) with 264. She also hit a home run, giving her 54 in her career and tying her with Amanda Locke (2008-12) for third all-time. She only trails Morgan (58, 2007-10) and Kelly Kretschman (60, 1998-01) for career homers.
It's spring break at The University, and Bama's softball players continue their Florida stay for another couple of days. The Tide went from Gainesville to Jacksonville, where Alabama will play a non-conference game against Jacksonville University at 5 p.m. CDT Tuesday.
Alabama returns to conference play this weekend at Rhoads Stadium in Tuscaloosa, hosting LSU. The Tide and Tigers will meet at 6:30 p.m. CDT Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday, and 1 p.m. Sunday.
Alabama Coach Patrick Murphy is now 816-218 (.789) overall and 331-103 (.763) in SEC play in his 16th season as Alabama's head coach.
