Tide Men's Golf Distant Second
The second-place finish snapped a streak of three straight wins for Alabama at the Linger Longer as Georgia pulled away for a 10-shot win with a 27-under total of 837. Georgia's 7-under 281 on Sunday was 10 shots better than anyone else in the field Sunday, and accounted for its entire margin of victory.
The Crimson Tide shot 3-over 291, which was the second-best score on Sunday, to finish second, 20 shots better than third-place Oklahoma (+3, 867). Clemson rallied for a fourth-place showing at 6-over 870 with Mercer and Liberty tying for fifth at 10over 874.
"The course played a lot tougher today, a little longer with tougher pins," Alabama Coach Jay Seawell said. "Unfortunately for the third straight tournament we were not good when we needed to be. Give Georgia credit, but the last three tournaments we haven't played Alabama golf. We have been too concerned with the results. It is time for us to get back to work and worry about ourselves."
Freshman Robby Shelton finished tied for first individually with Georgia's Michael Cromie at 9-under 207, but lost medalist honors in a one-hole playoff that saw Cromie make birdie on the 18th to Shelton's par. Shelton shot even-par 72 in the final rounds.
Senior Cory Whitsett and Trey Mullinax also shot even par in the third round to post top-10 finishes. Mullinax tied for fifth at 4-under 212 while Whitsett tied for 10th at 2-under 214. Fellow senior Bobby Wyatt shot 3-over 75 to join Whitsett in 10th at 214. Tom Lovelady's 75 was dropped from the team sore in the final round, and he finished tied for 49th at 10-over 226.
Alabama returns to action on April 4-6, at the Mason Rudolph Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.
