Tide Men's Golf Extends Lead To 10
Freshman Robby Shelton tied the Alabama school record in relation to par with an 8-under 64. He is three shots ahead of first-round leader Adam Schenk of Purdue at 13-under-par 131. Shelton, from Wilmer, carded eight birdies and no bogeys in his second round. The Crimson Tide has four players inside the top 11 in individual scoring.
Alabama is 10 shots ahead of second-place Georgia Tech (-21, 555) and 14 shots in front of Georgia (-17, 559) in third. Clemson is fourth at 13-under 563 with Purdue rounding out the top five at 5-under 571.
The Tide is a combined 122-under par over the last four years at the Puerto Rico Classic (11 rounds), averaging just over 11-under per round during that span. The Crimson Tide's 16-under 272 equals the lowest round of the 2013-14 season and is UA's 11th under-par total in 14 rounds this year. Alabama is averaging 4.5 strokes below par per round as a team this season.
Senior Bobby Wyatt made the biggest move up the leader board of the day, going from 42nd to 11th with a 6-under 66. He carded a 7-under 29 on the back nine and played his final 12 holes at 8-under, which included a stretch of nine holes (No. 11- No. 1) that he played in 8-under par.
The nation's No. 1 golfer Trey Mullinax continued to do what he does best – shoot under par – with a 3-under 69 that puts him in a tie for seventh place at 6-under 138. It was his ninth round in the 60s (14 rounds) and 10th round under par this season.
Cory Whitsett, who entered the day in a tie for second place, slipped to 11th with a 1-over-par 73. He is 4-under 140 after 36 holes, nine shots off of Shelton's lead. Tom Lovelady is tied for 35th after shooting a 4-over 76 Tuesday that was dropped from the team score.
Alabama will be paired with Georgia Tech and Georgia in the final round Tuesday. The shotgun start will begin with the Tide, Yellow Jackets and Bulldogs at 7:30 a.m. (AST) or 5:30 a.m. (CST). Alabama will be looking for its unprecedented 11th consecutive victory in Tuesday's final round.
