Posted Feb 18, 2014
The Alabama men's track & field team maintained its No. 11 in this week’s U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I National Team Computer Rankings. The Tide men also maintained their No. 2 ranking in the South Region rankings while the Alabama women moved up from No. 6 to No. 5 in the South Region.
had a very productive meet at the Tyson Invitational, hosted by the University of Arkansas. The Tide had three winners in the prestigious meet.
Senior Diondre Batson won the 200-meter dash Saturday with a time of 20.94. It was the best time among the 63 competitors in the event and the sixth best in Crimson Tide history.
On Friday, freshman Quanesha Burks led off the day with a win in the collegiate division long jump. Burks' mark of 6.25 meters (20 feet, 6.25 inches) ranks second in school history and lands in the top 20 nationally. Later Friday evening, senior Alexis Paine earned a victory in the invitational women's pole vault with a mark of 4.20 (13-9.25). Paine has now won the pole vault in three consecutive meets.
For the weekend, Bama competitors set more than a dozen personal records and had a large number of top-10 finishes against a field that included many of the top teams in the Southeastern Conference and Big 12.
"This weekend helped us set the tone for the SEC meet," said Alabama Coach Dan Waters.
The Crimson Tide will be off this weekend before heading to College Station, Texas, on February 27 for the SEC Indoor Championships.
The national team rankings are compiled by mathematical formulae based on national descending order lists and data taken from previous seasons. The purpose and methodology of the rankings is to create an index that showcases the teams that have the best potential of achieving the top spots in the national team race. Rankings points do not equate with NCAA Championships team points.
