Gamecocks Roll Past Tide Women

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Alabama women’s basketball team fell 77-51 to eighth-ranked South Carolina on Sunday at Colonial Life Arena. With the loss, the Crimson Tide drops to 8-10 overall and 1-4 in the Southeastern Conference, while the win brings the Gamecocks to 17-2 on the season and 5-1 against league opponents.

Freshman Ashley Williams recorded double-digit points for the 12th time this season and eighth time in the last nine games to lead Alabama with 16 points. She and sophomore Khadijah Carter had a team-best four rebounds, while junior Sharin Rivers finished with a team-high four assists. South Carolina was led by juniors Elem Ibiam, who finished with 18 points, and Aleighsa Welch, who had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

For the game, the Gamecocks shot 51.7 percent (30-58), while the Tide was 32.8 percent (19-58) from the floor. Alabama forced 15 South Carolina turnovers, nine of which came off steals, however the Gamecocks out-rebounded the Tide, 43-24.

South Carolina led from the start, scoring the first points of the game at the 19:27 mark. Alabama kept within single digits over the next seven minutes until a jumper by redshirt sophomore Tina Roy put the Gamecocks in front by 11. South Carolina would lead by as many as 22 in the half before the Tide cut it to 17, 43-26, at halftime.

The Gamecocks continued to distance themselves in the second half, pulling in front by 29 with 13:09 to play. The Tide was able to chip it down to 21 late, but was unable to get it any closer before time expired.

Alabama continues its road swing on Thursday when it heads to Lexington to face the 10th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats for the second time this season. The game will tip off in Memorial Coliseum at 6 p.m. CST.
