Alabama Basketball Disappoints At USF

Retin Obasohan

TAMPA, Fla. – The Alabama men's basketball team fell at South Florida Saturday night by a score of 66-64. Retin Obasohan led the Crimson Tide with a career-high 20 points, while Trevor Releford chipped in 17 points before fouling out late in the second half.

Junior guard Levi Randolph had 12 points and junior forward Nick Jacobs added 10 for Alabama.

The Tide (4-4) led 44-40 with just over 11 minutes remaining, but USF (6-2) went a 20-8 over the next nine minutes to take a 60-52 lead with 2:31 remaining.

Alabama would not quit and fought all the way back to make it a one possession game in the final minute.

With less than 20 seconds remaining, freshman Shannon Hale came off the bench and hit a big three-point shot to cut the lead to 65-64. After one made free throw from USF, the Tide had three chances to tie or take the lead in its final possession. Randolph's initial shot was blocked, but the ball went right to Hale, who wide-open for three but it didn't fall. Randolph grabbed the rebound but his shot fell short as time expired.

Forward Victor Rudd had 15 points to lead South Florida, while freshman forward Chris Perry had 14 points and 14 rebounds on the night.

The Crimson Tide will take a week off for final exams before returning to action next Saturday, Dec. 14, when it hosts Charleston Southern at Coleman Coliseum. With graduation going on earlier that same day, the tip time has been pushed back to 7:30 p.m. CT.
