When Alabama lost to Auburn Saturday, the Crimson Tide's first loss of the season, the general…
McCarron Continues Record Assault
The most dramatic of A.J. McCarron's Alabama records set against Auburn was his fourth quarter, 99-yard touchdown pass to Amari Cooper. The old Bama record was a Freddie Kitchens pass to Michael Vaughn for a 94-yard touchdown against Florida in the Southeastern Conference Championship Game in 1996.
McCarron also completed 17 passes in 29 attempts for three touchdowns and 277 yards with no interceptions against Auburn. He increased his Alabama record for career touchdown passes to 75 in his career (26 this season). He has now completed 667 records, and passed John Parker Wilson (665) for that Bama mark. He also increased his own record for career passing yards to 8,632.
But McCarron, now at 36-3 in his Alabama career as a starting quarterback, has the record for most wins, but he will not be able to surpass Jay Barker for best winning percentage. Barker was 35-2-1, for 93.4 per cent. The best McCarron will be able to be is 37-3, for 92.5 per cent.
McCarron also had never lost a road game.
Alabama had won 18 consecutive games away from Bryant-Denny Stadium before Saturday's loss. Alabama Coach Nick Saban's record of winning when leading at the half didn't come to fruition. Bama led 21-14 at halftime, but Saban lost for the fourth time when leading at the half in his Alabama coaching career. He is now 73-4 when leading at the half.
Alabama holds a 42-35-1 lead in a series that dates back to the 1893 season. The Crimson Tide and Tigers first met on Feb. 22, 1893, at Birmingham's Lakeview Park with the Tigers claiming a 32-22 victory in the inaugural meeting. Alabama has now won four of the last six.
Alabama will not be playing for a third consecutive national championship. Bama has won back-to-back national titles three times, but never three in a row. Tide back-to-backs were in 1964-65, 1978-79, and 2011-12.
With his touchdown run in the second quarter, T.J. Yeldon 10th all-time in Alabama history with 25 career rushing TDs. It was his 13th rushing touchdown of the season, which ranks 11th on the Tide's single-season list.
C.J. Mosley had a game-high 14 tackles in the game, giving him 313 for his career and making him the sixth man in Tide history to record over 300 tackles. Wayne Davis has the Bama record with 327 (1983-86).
When Jalston Fowler caught a three-yard touchdown pass for a touchdown in the second quarter, it extended Alabama's record of scoring in 168 consecutive games. Fowler now has seven receptions for his career, and five of them have been for touchdowns.
When Nick Marshall ran for a touchdown in the first quarter, it marked Auburn's first offensive touchdown against Alabama since 2010.
Chad Lindsay started at center for the Tide. Normal starter Ryan Kelly sprained a knee in practice this week.
Alabama captains were quarterback AJ McCarron, linebacker C.J. Mosley, and offensive lineman Kellen Williams.
Attendance was 87,451.
