Tide’s Kelly May Miss Auburn Game
Posted Nov 27, 2013
Although the injury to Alabama center Ryan Kelly wasn’t near as serious as mis-reported by some, the Crimson Tide may have to make an adjustment at the critical position Saturday. Fortunately, Alabama has made that adjustment earlier this year with no apparent dropoff.
Coach Nick Saban reported Wednesday that sophomore center
, who sprained a knee against
and missed starting three games, had suffered a similar injury in practice Tuesday. “But not nearly as serious,” Saban added.
Saban said that Kelly was limited in practice Wednesday “and will probably be limited [Thursday]. It will probably be a gameday decision in pre-game whether he can or can’t play in the game.”
The game, of course, is at
. Alabama, 11-0 overall and ranked first in the nation, plays against the Tigers, 10-1 and ranked fourth. Kickoff is at 2:30 p.m. CST Saturday. CBS will televise the game. The winner will represent the Western Division in the Southeastern Conference Championship Game on Dec. 7 in Atlanta.
Alabama has won four of the last five games in the series and holds a 42-34-1 edge all-time. The Tide has also captured the last two meetings in Auburn, with a 26-21 victory in 2009 and a 42-14 win in 2011. Both the 2009 and 2011 victories helped propel the Crimson Tide to national championships.
Saban said that junior
, who started the three games Kelly missed, would move up if Kelly is unable to play. “ Chad Lindsay did great when he played,” Saban said. “We played great on the offensive line and he did a really good job. We have every confidence in him. We view him as a starter.
“Ryan has a little more experience because he's played more, mostly this year. But Chad did a really good job for us and we have every confidence in him.
“It's an opportunity for him if Ryan can't play. I'm sure he'll do a good job for us.”
Alabama continued it preparations for Auburn on Wednesday with a two-hour practice in full pads practice inside the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility.
Cornerback has been a position of issues for Alabama this year with almost all hands injured at one time or another. Saban was asked if
would continue as a starter and how
has progressed from his injury situation. Saban also commented on starter
, who was held out of the last game with an injury.
Saban said, “Cyrus has done a good job. Deion Belue didn't play in the last game so Bradley's had to play a little bit in his spot. If Deion's okay, Bradley will probably back him up in this game. But we have confidence in Bradley and we have confidence in Cyrus.
“Right now, Cyrus is doing just fine, so that's probably how we'll sort of stay.”
