NEWPORT Beach, Calif. – The Alabama men’s golf team completed the sweep of the Crimson Tide’s four fall tournaments with a three-shot victory at the Gifford Collegiate at Pelican Hill on Tuesday afternoon.
It marked an
men's golf record 10th straight victory dating back to the 2013 Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters in March where they finished second, and the 12th straight round the Tide has finished with the lead. Alabama shot 5-over 285 in the final round Tuesday to edge
(839), who got within one shot in the final holes with a 1-under-par round of 279.
The Crimson Tide finished at 4-under 836 for the 54-hole event after rounds of 275 and 276 on Monday and are 32-under as a team this fall.
finished third at 2-over 842 while
(848) were fourth and fifth respectively.
“I am really proud of this team," Alabama Coach Jay Seawell said. "Winning is very difficult. It got down to one shot with two of our players still on the course and Bobby (Wyatt) and Trey (Mullinax) both buckled down and handled the situation to win this golf tournament.”
Alabama placed two players in the top 10 and all five inside the top 25 with Bobby Wyatt leading the way in a tie for fourth. The native of Mobile shot 2-over 72 in the final round for a 3-under 207, five shots off the winning score of Rico Hoey of USC (-8, 202).
True freshman Robby Shelton fired the Tide’s lowest round on Tuesday with a 2-under 68 that gave him 14th-place finish. Senior Trey Mullinax extended his streak of top-10 showings to four with a tie for sixth at 2-under 208 after a 72 in the final round.
Senior Cory Whitsett tied for 21st, but shot 77 Tuesday, which was dropped for the Alabama team score. He was 5-over 215 for the event. Sophomore Tom Lovelady tied for 25th at 6-over 216 with a 3-over 73 on Tuesday.
Alabama will take the winter off before beginning the spring schedule on Feb. 23-25, at the Puerto Rico Classic at the Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. The Crimson Tide have won three straight years in Puerto Rico and four of the last six.
