The University of Alabama dedicated the Sarah Patterson Champions Plaza in front of a vocal and supportive crowd Friday afternoon.

“As I said when CBS put the microphone up in 1988 and asked me what it was like to win the first national championship in a sport other than football … I am so honored to be a small part of the rich history and tradition of this great University,” Patterson said.

In addition to Patterson, Alabama NCAA Champion coaches Mic Potter (women’s golf), Patrick Murphy (softball) and Jay Seawell (men’s golf) all spoke during the ceremony along with UA President Judy Bonner and Director of Athletics Bill Battle.

The plaza honors the Crimson Tide's national champion coaches for all sports outside of football. It also features marble slabs highlighting all of the Tide's varsity sports besides football, including a listing of all the Tide's NCAA and Southeastern Conference titles.

The plaza fulfills the vision of former Alabama Director of Athletics Mal Moore, who passed away last spring.

"This plaza will be a way of recognizing the success of every sport, both SEC and national championships. It will really add to the setting of the Coleman Coliseum," Moore said in June 2012 when the plans for the plaza were approved by the UA Board of Trustees.

It was also during that that time in 2012 that the Trustees voted unanimously to name the plaza after Patterson, who along with her husband and assistant coach David Patterson, have won six NCAA titles during their 35-year career at the University.

The Pattersons have also led the Tide to seven Southeastern Conference Championships, an NCAA-best 28 regional titles and 31 consecutive NCAA Championship appearances.

Patterson, Potter, Murphy and Seawell all won national titles during an exciting two year period that saw Alabama claim two BCS National Football Championships, two NCAA Gymnastics titles and the Tide's first NCAA Championships in women's golf, softball and men's golf.
