Alabama Continues Atop Football Polls

Two things that were not a surprise in this week’s college football polls: Alabama remained number one and the Crimson Tide had a little slippage in number one votes.
On a Saturday when many of the top teams ran roughshod over inferior competition,
was less than impressive in defeating
, 31-6, in the Bryant-Denny Stadium opener for the Crimson Tide. Still, in the fifth week of football, Bama received 56 of 60 first place votes in the Associated Press rankings and 59 of 62 voted in the Coaches Poll conducted by USA Today to maintain the top spot, as has been the case since the pre-season.
Last week Bama had 59 of 60 first place votes in the AP poll and 61 of 62 from Coaches.
On Saturday, the news was how many ranked teams were playing cupcakes, and the results were predictable for many – routs by the likes of
This week, Alabama will be hosting a ranked team when the Crimson Tide hosts
, holding down the 21st spot. The Rebels had an open date Saturday.
The top ten teams in both the AP and Coaches polls were the same, although the order slightly different.
was number two in both polls and received the four AP votes and the three Coaches votes not awarded to Alabama.
In the AP poll,
was third and Ohio State fourth, while the coaches had the Buckeyes third, the Tigers fourth. Six through eight in both rankings had it
, Louisville, FSU. Two Southeastern Conference teams,
were in spots nine and ten, the Bulldogs ninth by the AP, the Aggies ninth by the coaches.
In addition to the four SEC teams in the top 10 and Mississippi at 21st,
was 12th in the AP and 13th in the Coaches Poll,
19th in the Coaches and 20th in the AP.
was among those in the “Others receiving votes” category in both polls.
, Alabama’s season-opening opponent, was also among those receiving votes.
Alabama has been ranked in 697 of the 1,059 AP polls since 1936. The Crimson Tide owns a 421-122-8 record (.771 percentage) in games when ranked by the AP. Under Coach
, Bama has a 63-10 record (.863 percentage) when ranked.
Alabama has been ranked in the AP poll for a school record 85 consecutive weeks.
