SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. – The United States ran away with a 17-9 victory on Sunday over the Great Britain…
U.S. Continues To Lead Walker Cup
Upcoming Alabama seniors Bobby Wyatt and Cory Whitsett teamed together once again to tally USA's first point of the morning. The Americans took a 1-up lead with a win on the 15th hole. On the 17th hole, Whitsett hit his approach shot out of the rough within birdie range. Wyatt then sank the birdie putt to close out GB&I 2 and 1.
"It's a great feeling anytime you can add one on the board," Wyatt said following the morning match. "The 15th hole was definitely a turning point; we won that hole with a bogey. That's just a gift. Fortunately, we were able to take that and run with it."
Incoming Tide freshman Gavin Moynihan and Kevin Phelan came from four down for GB&I to hold off the tandem of USA's Patrick Rodgers and Jordan Niebrugge for a 2-up victory, winning the 17th and 18th holes. Moynihan leads all GB&I players with two points heading into Sunday afternoon singles.
"We were 4 down and we hadn't played that badly," Moynihan said. "Then Kevin started hitting them close; iron play is the strength of his game."
Wyatt went out in the afternoon's first match with Justin Thomas out in match No. 2. Whitsett teed off in match six and Moynihan closes things out for GB&I in match No. 10.
