Tide In Full Gear For Hot Practice

Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban doesn’t just watch what’s going on in Crimson Tide football practices. He’s an active participant, drilling Bama cornerbacks.

Alabama will be facing a strong-armed quarterback when the Crimson Tide meets Virginia Tech Saturday at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The Hokies’ Logan Thomas throws bullets.

If, though, Logan happens to uncork a wounded duck, at least one Bama cornerback will be ready for it. That’s because Saban appeared to let one slip in Monday’s position drills, and the cornerback had to scramble to get it.

Alabama was in full gear in Monday’s work. The heat and humidity of Monday won’t bea problem when Alabama and Virginia Tech kick off at 5:30 EDT (4:30 central time) Saturday in Atlanta. The teams will be playing in the climate-controlled Georgia Dome.

What is seen by reporters in the brief viewing period at Bama practices offers little more than hints at what might be in store on game day. The period (two periods on a good day) are not of anything approaching scrimmage work. Linebackers are in drills in one corner of the field, quarterback sin another, etc.

Observation of the quarterback drills had, of course, A.J. McCarron first and Blake Sims second, as was the case on the depth chart released by The University Monday. There were no third or fourth quarterbacks on the depth chart. If the order of taking snaps in drills is an indication, however, it would seem that redshirt freshman Alec Morris is number three and true freshman walk-on Luke Del Rio number four. That is not guaranteed information!
