Tide Represented In PGA Tourney
Posted Jun 22, 2013
Former Alabama golfer Dicky Pride and current Tide player upcoming junior Justin Thomas finished round one on Thursday at the Travelers Championship (Cromwell, Conn.) with a 67 (-3) and 72 (+2) respectively. Friday evening after the second round, the duo was tied with ten others at 138 (-2), thus making the cut for weekend play.
golfers -- Bud Cauley (141), Jason Bohn (143) and Michael Thompson (145) -- were not so fortunate. The trio failed to make the even par cut of 140.
Thomas, who had a sponsor's exemption to play in the PGA event as an amateur and who helped the Crimson Tide to this year's NCAA Championship, had two birdies and two bogeys on the front nine. He caught fire on the back nine with five birdies, three in a row on nos. 12, 13 and 14. A third bogey interrupted the streak. He managed to finish the round with a 66 (-4). The current Alabama sophomore’s seven birdie round tied for the tournament high on day two along with former
golfer Tag Ridings.
Pride had a rough start with bookend bogeys at no. 10 and 18 along with an additional two in between for a back nine total of four. One birdie at no. 15 was a positive. He played steady on the front nine and shot two birdies to complete the second round with a 71 (+1).
Despite six second round birdies, Cauley (68) was not able to overcome two bogeys and one double bogey falling just one stroke shy of the even cut mark. Bohn (71) was blessed with five birdies but burdened with six bogeys dooming his efforts to be a weekend participant. Thompson (72) had a single birdie and two bogeys, one a double falling five shots short of the qualifying 140 total.
Veteran Dicky Pride and amateur Justin Thomas have earned the chance to represent the Crimson Tide at the 2013 Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn for rounds three and four. Pride is schedule to tee off at no. 1 with a starting time of 10:09 EDT. Thomas is the very next pairing right behind at 10:18 EDT.
