POINT CLEAR – Alabama redshirt freshman Cammie Gray won the 81st Alabama Golf Association Women’s State Amateur at the Lakewood Golf Club’s Dogwood Course on Friday afternoon.

The daughter of former Alabama quarterback Alan Gray defeated Lea Green of McCalla 3 and 2 in a back-and-forth match that saw the Crimson Tide’s Gray take control on the first few holes of the back nine. Gray, a native of Northport, was 1 up with six holes remaining in the match but she won the 13th and 14th holes to take a 3 up lead with four holes to play.

The 15th hole was halved with pars before the match ended on the 16th with a half, giving Gray her first Alabama Women’s Amateur title in just her second appearance.

Gray reached the championship match by beating Nancy Gavin (Jackson Gap) 5 and 4 along with Susan West (Tuscaloosa) 4 and 3 on Wednesday. She then knocked out 10-time champion Kathy Hartwiger in 19 holes on Thursday.
