A-Day Has Action In Final Minutes
The Alabama A-Day Game ended with the White, the first offense and second defense, defeating the Crimson (second offensive, first defense), 17-14. A.J. McCarron directed the winning touchdown after the Crimson had scored its decond defensive touchdown of the game to take the lead.
McCarron took his team 70 yards in four plays, keyed by a 50-yard pass to Christion Jones, and T.J. Yeldon took it in from seven yards out for the winning touchdown.
And the White almost gave more ammunition for television commentators (among others) who worry about a team "scoring too fast." The White took only 57 seconds for its winning drive, leaving the Crimson just over a minute to try to pull out the victory. Redshirt freshman quarterback Alec Morris directed the Crimson to deep into White territory, but the last gasp died at the 11-yard line on an incomplete pass, broken up by Landon Collins.
The Crimson had taken the lead for the first time in the game with 2:01 remaining as safety HaHa Clinton-Dix went 55 yards with a fumble recovery. Cornerback Deion Belue forced the ball out of the hands of tight end Brian Vogler, allowing Clinton-Dix to make the play.
The other Crimson touchdown was also a defensive runback. Vinnie Sunseri picked off McCarron at the 14 and took it back 86 yards as time expired in the first half. Adam Griffith kicked both Crimson extra points.
McCarron had two four-play, 70-yard touchdown drives in the game.
The White took the lead on its first possession to open the game. After a run was wiped out by penalty, McCarron completed passes of 5 yards to Christion Jones, 12 yards to Yeldon, 23 yards to Kenny Bell, and then again to Bell, 40 yards for the score. Cade Foster kicked the first of his two extra points.
Foster also had a first quarter field goal moments later. Nick Perry made the first of his two interceptions of quarterback Blake Sims and returned it 42 yards to the Crimson 12. But Ed Stinson's sack of McCarron killed a chance for the touchdown and the White settled for Foster's 29-yard field goal and a 10-0 lead.
Yeldon was the game's leading rusher with 15 carries for 69 yards. Kenyan Drake, playing for the Crimson, had 8 rushes for 33 yards. McCarron completed 19 of 30 passes for 223 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Morris was top passer for the Crimson with 10-18 for 141 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. Sims was 5-10 for 52 yards with two interceptions.
Yeldon had seven receptions for 60 yards, Vogler 4 for 24, Armari Cooper 4-21, Bell 3-71, and Jones 3-55 for the White. The Crimson was led in number of receptions by Drake, but the receivers had the yards – DeAndrew White 3-62, Chris Black 3-51, Raheem Falkins 3-43, and O.J. Howard 3-22. Two walk-ons had nice receptions, Parker Barrineau a 19-yard catch for the White, tailback Trey Roberts a 31-yard gain on a short pass for the Crimson.
Cody Mandell punted for both teams, a total of 7 kicks for 338 yards, a 48.3 average.
Perry returned his two interceptions for 42 yards. Landon Collins also had a pick, running it back 28 yards, converted wide receiver Cyrus Jones had a pick with no return, and walk-on linebacker Tyler Owens had an interception with no return.
C.J. Mosley was in a black (no contact) jersey and some of his tackles were two-hand touch, but he led with nine tackles (four primary). Other leaders for the Crimson (first) defense were Tana Patrick had four primary and four assists for eight, Clinton-Dix 1-5, Stinson 2-3, Belue 3-1, and Brandon Ivory 3-1. White tackle leader was Landon Collins with 2-3, Jabriel Washington 3-1, Dillon Lee 1-3, and Jarrick Williams 1-3.
Belue had three pass break-ups, Collins and Lee two each.
The A-Day Game marked the end of spring practice. Alabama opens the 20-13 season in quest of its third consecutive national championship on Aug. 31 against Virginia Tech in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
