Alabama Baseball At Mississippi
Posted Apr 12, 2013
When Charley Sullivan was growing up in Oxford, Miss., and playing high school baseball, he was best known as a good shortstop with arm problems. He went away to junior college and then to Alabama. He returns home tonight, pitching against the hometown Mississippi Rebels as the Southeastern Conference baseball season reaches the midway point.
has been one of the surprise teams in the SEC with an 8-4 conference record, good enough to be tied for second in the Western Division, and an overall mark of 22-13. Bama won only 21 games all last year.
has been having a hard time scoring runs and has lost eight of its last 10 games and seven of its last nine conference games. The rebels are 23-10 overall, but only 4-8 in the SEC.
Alabama is ranked 22nd in the nation, Ole Miss 18th.
Charley Sullivan is a senior right-hander who has a 3-2 record and 2.52 earned run average for the Tide. He’ll pitch the opener for Alabama at 6:30 CDT tonight (Friday) at Swayze Field. Sullivan is going up against a tough customer as the Rebels’ Bobby Wahl, a junior right-hander, is 6-0 with a 1.57 ERA.
Game two of the series will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday and be televised regionally by CSS. The series winds up Sunday with first pitch at 1:30.
The Crimson Tide is scheduled to start LHP Justin Kamplain (0-0, 4.34 ERA) on Saturday and Spencer Turnbull (4-1, 2.22 ERA) on Sunday. Kamplain has made 13 appearances out of the bullpen this season and will make his first start of the year on Saturday. Turnbull – a native of Madison, Miss. -- enters the weekend with a 29 2/3 scoreless inning streak on the line. The Rebels are scheduled to start RHP Mike Mayers (2-4, 3.20 ERA) on Saturday and RHP Sam Smith (2-0, 4.40) ERA) on Sunday.
The three-game series between Alabama and Mississippi will mark games 338-340 between the two schools. Alabama holds a 198-138-1 record all-time versus the Rebels after winning one of three games of the 2012 series. The Tide posted a series win over the Rebels when the teams met in Oxford, Miss., during the 2011 season. UA holds a 6-4 record in the last 10 games between the two schools.
Brett Booth continues to lead the Alabama offense with a .293 batting average. Booth also leads the club in runs scored (31) and is tied with Kyle Overstreet for the team lead with 24 RBI. Booth has three home runs and is tied with Austen Smith for the team lead in that category as well. Leadoff man, Georgie Salem, leads the team with 42 hits for a .292 average, which ranks second on the club. Ben Moore is hitting .287 with two home runs, 22 RBI and a team-leading three triples this season.
