Tide Fans Forced To Make Choice
While Alabama is taking the first pitch from UAB in Hoover Tuesday night, the Crimson Tide basketball team will be taking a good bit of the attention of Bama fans in Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa. Alabama basketball is playing in the NIT.
It's too bad about the choice Tide fans have to make, because Alabama baseball these days is worthy of full attention. Bama is 16-9 overall and 5-1 in Southeastern Conference play with six straight wins. The Tide is coming off a three-game sweep of Georgia in Athens.
UAB is 9-14, including an 9-3 Conference-USA record and is on a five-game losing streak.
Following the midweek game against UAB, Alabama remains on the road for its third SEC series of the season. The Tide will be at Auburn, which is 0-6 in SEC games. The three-game series gets an early start in order to avoid playing on Eastern Sunday. The series begins on Thursday night with a 6 p.m. CDT, first pitch from Plainsman Park. Game two will also be at 6 p.m. on Friday and the series wraps up on Saturday at 3 p.m. The final game of the series will be televised on CSS with Matt Stewart and Joe Beckwith calling the action.
Against UAB, Alabasma will start junior right-handed pitcher Tucker Hawley, who is 4-1 with a 3.07 earned run average. UAB will pitch left-handed sophomore Sam Kelley (1-1, 2.95 ERA).
Looking back on Bama's last week, Kyle Overstreet hit .688 (11-for-16) with a .938 slugging percentage and a .773 on-base percentage in five Alabama wins. Ray Castillo recorded saves in three of the five games, while posting a 0.00 ERA in 4.1 innings, allowing three hits with five strikeouts, while holding opponents to a .176 average in his three appearances.
The Tuesday night mid-week game against UAB will make the 62nd meeting all-time between the two schools. After dropping both games to the Blazers during the 2012 season, Alabama holds a 42-19 overall record against UAB. Alabama is 4-6 in the last 10 meetings against UAB, and has lost three straight overall. This will mark the 11th time that Alabama and UAB have played in Hoover. The Tide is 5-5 when playing UAB in Hoover.
