Men, Women Golfers In Tough Tourneys
The Alabama men's team of Coach Jay Seawell and the Crimson Tide women's team of Coach Mic Potter are both ranked second in the nation.
The Tide men lwill play at the 2013 Schenkel at the par 72, 6,662-yard Forest Heights Country Club. Bama won the tournament last year.
The Alabama women will play the Suntrust Gator Women's Invitational at the par 70, 6,074-yard Mark Bostick Golf Course on the Florida campus. Alabama is fresh off a win at the Darius rucker Intercollegiate and Bama – the defending national champion -- has three tournament titles in 2012-13. The Tide finished runner-up by one stroke to the host Gators at last year's tournament.
The Crimson Tide women will begin this year's tournament at 8 a.m. (CDT) today. Alabama will be playing with Florida and Oklahoma during the first round. Saturday's second round will get underway at 8 a.m. (CDT) with a shotgun start slated on Sunday beginning at 7:45 a.m.
Alabama will start the same lineup it has throughout the spring with junior Stephanie Meadow, senior Jennifer Kirby, junior Hannah Collier, true freshman Emma Talley, and sophomore Daniela Lendl.
Meadow, who was named the SEC Golfer of the Week on Wednesday, after a third-place finish at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, is averaging below par for the season and leads the team with a 71.59 scoring average. She was also the Tide's top scorer in Gainesville last season, finishing fourth at even-par 210.
Talley, from Princeton, Ky., finished 12th last week in Hilton Head Island, S.C., and is second on the team with a 73.47 stroke average while Kirby is third at 73.71.
The Gator Women's Invitational boasts a 15-team field that features seven teams ranked in the most recent Golf World/WGCA Coaches' Poll – No. 2 Alabama, No. 4 Oklahoma, No. 5 North Carolina, No. 6 Florida, No. 18 Baylor, No. 20 Virginia and No. 21 Oklahoma State. The field also includes FIU, Florida State, Kent State, Miami (Fla.), Mississippi State, San Diego State, South Florida, Chattanooga.
The Alabama men's team is coming off a second place finish at the Southern Highland Collegiate Masters in Las Vegas afgter winning the Puerto Rico Classic to open play this spring.
The Crimson Tide's lineup in 2013 features sophomore Justin Thomas, juniors Cory Whitsett and Bobby Wyatt along with senior Scott Strohmeyer and redshirt freshman Tom Lovelady. Lee Knox, a native of Augusta, Ga., will be participating as an individual.

The 2013 Schenkel Invitational boasts a 15-team field that features five teams ranked in the top 30 of the most recent Nike/Golf World Coaches' Poll – No. 2 Alabama, No. 5 Texas, No. 8 Florida, No. 28 North Florida, No. 30 Vanderbilt. The field also includes UAB, UCF, College of Charleston, Georgia Southern, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, North Texas, Notre Dame, and Virginia.
Thomas and Whitsett led the Tide a season ago with a tie for third place at 12-under-par 204. The pair is also the Tide's top-two scorers this season with Thomas averaging 71.1 strokes per round and Whitsett close behind with a 71.61 scoring average.
Thomas and Whitsett are ranked 11th and 16th, respectively in the most recent Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, while Wyatt is close behind in 19th.
