Former Miami assistant and FIU head coach Mario Cristobal is officially headed to Alabama as the Crimson Tide's new offensive line coach and assistant head coach.

Alabama has made it official—Miami assistant and former Florida International head coach Mario Cristobal has been hired as the Crimson Tide’s new offensive line coach and assistant head coach.

“I want to thank Coach Saban and everyone here at the University of Alabama for this incredible opportunity,” Cristobal said in a statement.

The news of Cristobal coming to Alabama was first reported by Jeremy Fowler of CBS Sports on Monday, but UA didn’t publicly announce the hire until Wednesday.

“We are very pleased to announce the addition of Mario Cristobal to our staff,” Alabama head coach Nick Saban said in a statement. “He has an outstanding reputation as both a coach and a recruiter. He will be a great fit in our organization and I think our players will respond to his positive attitude and energy.

“This is a very important hire in terms of working with our offensive line and we feel fortunate that we were able to hire a coach of Mario’s caliber. We want to welcome Mario and his family to the University of Alabama and we are excited to have them here.”

Cristobal, 42, was fired by FIU in December and was hired by his alma mater Miami in January. While at FIU, he took the program to its first two bowl games in school history.

Cristobal played offensive tackle at The U from 1988-92 and was part of two national championship teams (1989, 1991).

After a short career in the NFL and college coaching stints at Rutgers, Miami and FIU, Cristobal is headed to Alabama to replace offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland, who accepted the same position with the Philadelphia Eagles last month.

Cristobal is a huge get for the Tide in developing what is now a young offensive line after losing veterans Chance Warmack, Barrett Jones and D.J. Fluker, and in terms of South Florida recruiting.

South Carolina’s Shawn Elliott (who pulled his name out of the running) and UCF’s Brent Key also interviewed for the job.
