Four Alabama football players arrested

The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office has reports that four Alabama football players were arrested Monday night on charges of second degree armed robbery and fraudulent use of a credit/debit card.

Four members of the Alabama football team were arrested Monday night.

According to the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office, freshman linebacker Tyler Hayes and redshirt freshman defensive end Dennis “D.J.” Pettway were charged with second degree armed robbery, redshirt freshman H-back Brent Calloway was charged with fraudulent use of a credit/debit card, and freshman safety Eddie Williams was charged with both crimes.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban announced the players' punishment in a statement released by the school Tuesday afternoon.

“The young men charged are indefinitely suspended as we continue to gather information and talk to the appropriate people," Saban said. "The University and football program have strict guidelines regarding issues of this magnitude. This behavior is unacceptable for any student-athlete at the University of Alabama and not representative of our football program.”

According to the arrest warrants, Pettway, 20, Williams, 20, and Hayes, 18, attacked and robbed two UA students. Per the warrants, the three players were accused of punching Samuel Jurgens in the head and face, and kicking him in the ribs and back area, which caused several lacerations to the face, a mild concussion and severe swelling.

In the report, the players admitted to taking the student's backpack, which contained an Apple Macbook Pro.

In a separate incident, Williams attacked Caleb Paul while Hayes and Pettway waited in the car "with knowledge of his intent while he committed the crime." Williams stole Paul's wallet and later used a debit card to buy snacks in the vending machine in the Bryant Hall Dormitory.

Calloway, 20, who was not involved in the aforementioned attacks and robberies, did admit to using the stolen debit card for numerous purchases, per the police report.

Calloway, a former four-star recruit, was also arrested in 2011 on a marijuana charge. The 6-foot-1, 217-pounder was a star linebacker in high school, but Saban has moved him around, trying him at running back, H-back and tight end.

Williams, a former five-star recruit, was also arrested Sunday night on an unlicensed gun charge.

According to a Tuscaloosa Police Department release, Williams was arrested after an incident at a BP gas station on University Boulevard. A clerk told police that Williams was "acting erratic" and "threatening that he had something in the trunk of his vehicle" after he got into an altercation about paying for gas, per the release.

Police found Williams driving in a 2007 Honda Accord at the corner of 2nd Ave. and University. Officers found a pistol in Williams' pants pocket, which he did not have a license to own. He was arrested and later released on $500 bond.

"This is a very serious matter and we are very disappointed in the actions that have resulted in the charges against these student-athletes," Alabama Athletics Director Mal Moore said in a statement issued by UA. "In this type of situation, the Athletics Department works in conjunction with the University. We will have more to say at the appropriate time.”

All four players were backups on this year's national championship team.
