Gators announce addition of Lawing

Florida head coach Will Muschamp didn't waste time filling his coaching staff. The Gators officially announced the hiring of South Carolina defensive line coach Brad Lawing on Tuesday. Lawing will coach the Florida defensive line and have the title of assistant head coach.

Brad Lawing spent 17 years at South Carolina over two stints in Columbia. Before returning to South Carolina in 2006, Lawing spent two years as the defensive ends coach and recruiting coordinator at North Carolina.

He worked at Michigan State from 1999-2002 while coaching the defensive line and serving as the recruiting coordinator. He spent one of those years working under current Alabama head coach Nick Saban. Lawing started his coaching career in Columbia, serving as the defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator from 1989-1998.

"We are excited to have Brad Lawing join our coaching staff," said Florida head coach Will Muschamp. "His track record speaks for itself - his nearly three decades of experience coaching defensive lineman, his familiarity with the SEC and our shared philosophical beliefs make him a perfect fit for our program."

Lawing has built a reputation for developing defensive linemen. The 55-year-old coached All-American Jadeveon Clowney while turning former two-star recruit Devin Taylor into an All-SEC honoree. Melvin Ingram came to South Carolina as a three-star linebacker before gaining weight, and Lawing turned him into a first-round pick. Defensive tackle Byron Jerideau was unranked out of junior college, but Lawing noticed him, signed him and turned him into a starter in the SEC.

"I'm excited to have the opportunity to work with Coach Muschamp and the entire Gator coaching staff," said Lawing. "Coach Muschamp and I share the same philosophical beliefs defensively. I've enjoyed the many years I've had in South Carolina and I'm grateful for the opportunities Coach Spurrier provided to me."
