The Auburn women's basketball team couldn't hang close vs. fifth-ranked Kentucky.

Lexington, Ky.--Kentucky’s pressure defense forced 30 turnovers as the Wildcats built a big first half lead on the way to a 97-53 SEC women’s basketball victory over Auburn on Sunday.

The Tigers dropped to 13-5 overall and 2-4 in the SEC with their third consecutive loss to a ranked opponent while fifth-ranked Kentucky improved to 18-1 overall and 6-0 in the SEC.

The Wildcats, who hit a dozen treys while Auburn made just one, jumped out to a 51-21 lead at halftime.

“It is embarrassing to be down by that much at the half,” said Auburn coach Terri Williams-Flournoy, whose Tigers were out-rebounded 40-31.

“Right away we did not do a good job of handling the pressure,” the coach said. “They are not No. 5 in the country for no good reason. They are big, athletic and strong and have good guards.”

Sophomore guard Hasina Muhammad led the Tigers in scoring with 13 points while junior center Peyton Davis added 11 points.

With seven points and three rebounds, senior forward Blanche Alverson also became just the fourth player in Auburn women’s basketball history to accumulate 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 100 assists, 100 steals and 50 blocks in her career. Alverson tied Tiffany Krantz for second all-time at Auburn in career three-pointers with 184.

A’dia Mathies of Kentucky led all scorers with 24 points.

The Tigers will return to action with an 8 p.m. on Thursday at Alabama.
