The Auburn women's basketball team earned its eighth consecutive victory on Saturday with Jet Ouardad leading the way.

Auburn, Ala.--Senior point guard Jet Ouardad came up one steal shy of a triple-double as the Tigers cruised to an 80-51 women’s basketball victory over visiting Samford on Saturday.

Ouardad scored a career-high 14 points while adding 11 assists and nine steals for her first Auburn double-double as the Tigers won their eighth consecutive game to improve to 11-2.

Auburn took control of the game in the first half with its full-court pressure defense that forced 26 turnovers by the visitors. Those turnovers negated good shooting by Samford, a team that finished the game with 12 made three-pointers on 24 shots.

“I feel like we were really successful at traps and that caused a lot of turnovers on their end,” Ouardad said. “A lot of people on the team had steals. That was the main reason why we won the game and built up on the lead.”

Auburn scored 32 of its points off of turnovers.

“Also, we had a lot of people shooting well,” the point guard added. “We shared the ball pretty well. I feel like our team being so unselfish we balanced everything on offense also.”

The Bulldogs fell to 5-6 with the loss. “Auburn is good,” said Samford coach Mike Morris. “They are very athletic. They do a good job from a defensive standpoint of mixing up their defense and extending it. It is hard to get past it because of their length.”

The Tigers put four players in double figures with sophomore guard Hasina Muhammad lead the team with 19 points. Blanche Alverson added 15 points and Tyrese Tanner scored 11.

“We wanted to defend the three a little bit better, but we didn’t--but we still won,” Auburn coach Terri Williams-Flournoy said. “I had a couple of kids who played extremely well. I thought (Ouardad) played well. I thought Hasina and Blanche played well, and (Tyrese Tanner) is just really coming along playing the top of our press. She’s really getting a lot of the steals that are happening because she’s forcing them with her pressure up top.

“I think one of the biggest things now in looking at our record at 11-2 is that we have to take this and everything that we’ve done into the tough SEC conference and get a little bit better at everything that we do,” the coach added.

Her Tigers will begin SEC play with a home game on Thursday vs. 25th-ranked Arkansas.
