Over 80 football players are participating in this event and a number made plays on Thursday. Ten really stood out to Scout and we list those who made the strongest impressions in this feature.
Bryson Allen-Williams | 6-2/213 | OLB | Cedar Grove
It would be nice to see Allen-Williams back on the second level at linebacker so he could work some in space and in coverage, but he is working at end, and he was quick off the edge on day one. He is great anticipation, he fires off the ball, and he only plays at one speed, fast. He could play inside or outside linebacker on the next level and be used as a rush specialist in certain situations, but in this game, he should really pressure the opposing quarterbacks.
Nick Chubb | 5-10/200 | RB | Cedartown
This young man created a buzz at North Atlanta Thursday afternoon. He had a good morning practice, then had an even better afternoon practice. He ran for over 2,700 yards in 2012 and he is a high three-star on Scout at this time, but he will add that fourth star early in the new year. He is quicker than expected, he got to the edge numerous times against some fast linebackers, and he showed toughness sticking up inside against a very good defensive front. He is a better back than many may have thought entering this event.
DeMarques Gates | 6-2/218 | OLB | Lovejoy
The Lovejoy defense was a big reason why they returned to the state championship game in 2012 and Gates was a big part of that. He is a lean linebacker close to 220 pounds with good length, good speed to the ball, and he is moved well in space. He is a kid that will pick up numerous offers in the coming months.
Justin Jones | 6-2/260 | DT | South Cobb
He is listed at 6-feet, 2-inches tall, and that may be stretching it a bit, but this kid is one to watch. He has great feet, he moved very well in the position drills, the inside run, and the team on this day. He is a nimble defensive lineman who can move. Expect to hear more about Jones in the coming months.
Demarre Kitt | 6-1/192 | WR | Sandy Creek
You have those guys that make things look easy at times, that was Kitt on Thursday. He made leaping catches, he made a one-handed catch 40 yards down the field, he made catches over a corner and safety, and he was extremely impressive. He is already a four-star receiver on Scout, but he will move up early in 2013 as we update the rankings. People that question his speed shouldn't; he simply plays as fast as he needs to.
Dontavius Russell | 6-3/303 | DT | Carrollton
Russell impressed Scout when we saw him live back in November and he picked up right where he left off on Thursday. He has very strong hands, he plays with good leverage, and he was very impressive when moving laterally today. He has a good burst off the ball and it will get better. He is one of the top defensive prospects in the state of Georgia for next year.
Elisha Shaw | 6-5/295 | DT | Tucker
It is hard for Shaw's stock to go up too much because he is already a top Scout100 member, but he was again impressive on Thursday. He is so quick off the ball, he is so athletic, and he is so disruptive in the trenches. He is still a raw prospect and he needs to improve the play of his hands and his pad level, but he has a very high ceiling on either side of the ball. Expect most, if not all schools to recruit him as a defensive tackle.
D.J. Smith | 6-1/180 | CB | Walton
Smith was a little slow in the morning practice with a sore toe, but he was back in the afternoon, and he was back in a big way. He is such a talented and versatile athlete and Scout has him ranked as the no. 13 corner in the country right now, but look for him to be a top 10 safety when the rankings are updated. He flashes through the secondary with great speed, he closes on the ball extremely well, and he is going to continue to grow in the coming year. This young man has a lot of natural ability and a lot of upside.
Deshaun Watson | 6-3/185 | QB | Gainesville
Watson had a strong start on Thursday at quarterback. He threw the ball very well in the morning session. He threw a very catchable ball, he spun the ball well, and he showed great touch. He is already a member of the Scout300 and he has made his case for months for the top junior quarterback in the Peach State.
Juwon Young | 6-3/230 | OLB | Albany
No offers yet for Young, that should change in the not so distant future. This young man has been on the Scout radar since the spring of 2012 and he is a high three-star now, but there is no question that he is a four-star talent. He worked at outside linebacker and was killing receivers on the bubble screens and catching running backs on the edge before the could turn the corner. He looks like a college linebacker right now and he hits like one too. He really attacked the football well on Thursday and he took good angles while doing that. He is receiving a lot of mail, but no offers yet.
Others that stood out: Cole Garvin (QB - Sandy Creek), Cortez McDowell (S - Locust Grove), Raekwon McMillan (LB - Liberty County), and Milan Richard (TE - Calvary Day).
