Anyone watching the Father-Son Challenge on television over the weekend might have noticed the 6-foot-5 inch son of the famed Davis Love III. He was the one wearing the white golf cap with the familiar Alabama script "A." To get a good look at the two, all you had to do was watch the trophy presentation at the end.
Alabama
freshman Dru Love teamed up with his father, Davis Love III, over the weekend to win the PNC Father-Son Challenge at the par-72, 7,120-yard Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, Fla.
Dru, who calls Sea Island, Ga., home, is a freshman member of Coach Jay Seawell's Crimson Tide men's golf team. Davis Love III, of course, is one of the most successful professional golfers in history.
The Loves finished at 23-under-par 121 after an opening-round 60 and a closing-round 61, edging Larry and Josh Nelson by one shot in the two-day scramble format.
Dru rolled in an eight-foot putt to seal the win on the 18th Sunday afternoon. Both of the Love’s approach shots on the par-5 18th hole missed the green. The elder Love found the touch on a pitch shot to within eight feet before Dru sank the winning putt.
"We made it a little tougher on ourselves than we wanted," said Davis Love III. "But it was great to leave that putt for Dru so he could make it to win."
The win netted Davis Love III the entire first-prize check of $200,000. The tournament included such greats as Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Vijay Singh, Nick Faldo, Lee Trevino, Mark O’Meara, Fuzzy Zoeller, Fred Funk, Hale Irwin, Bernhard Langer, Lee Janzen, Steve Elkington, Raymond Floyd, Lanny Watkins and Sandy Lyle.
"I definitely learned a lot this week," Dru Love said. "I know this isn't quite as big a tournament as the PGA, but you see the way that it's supposed to be done."
