WELL THAT WAS quick. Sean Mannion, who had surgery to repair a torn meniscus less than two weeks ago…
So about that 2013 QB commit for the Beavs...
It's an official visit weekend and recruits will be in town to see No. 8 Oregon State host Utah on Saturday night. L.J. Moore, a four-star CB with lots of offers is scheduled to be in town. Tatum Taylor out of Seattle was coming but informed BF.C this afternoon he wouldn't be making the trip this weekend. Damien Haskins out of Texas, a running back verbally committed to Memphis, is also scheduled to be in town.
But what about a QB???
BCS SCHOOLS, OREGON STATE INCLUDED, these days have their QB on board by mid-summer.
Over the past five years, the Beavs have received their QB verbal commitments in a very narrow window -- from June 17 - July 3.
Not this time. It's mid-October and the Beavs still don't have their quarterback. And that's downright surprising.
Given the situation, one of two things seems likely to happen...
A QB who verballed elsewhere will decommit and pledge Oregon State. Or, the Beavs are going to go old-school.
USED TO BE in recruiting that college coaches waited to see the senior season before extending offers and accepting verbals. Back in 1999, when Jim Lambright was fired as coach of the Huskies, he said on the day the axe fell -- Dec. 30 -- that the UW was further ahead in verbal commitments than they'd ever been before. They had nine commits.
But recruiting has changed and verbals have gotten ever earlier. And QBs are usually one of the first guys to go. So for OSU, where do they turn?
A JC option doesn't seem likely with Sean Mannion a junior-to-be next year and Cody Vaz, who will be a senior. Behind them are Brett Vanderveen and Richie Harrington -- a second year freshman and third year walk on sophomore next year, respectively.
Khari McGee was offered by Oregon State earlier this year and is listed as a QB but there's some question if he'll play that position at the next level. He's a backup QB for his high school team this season, and his calling at the next level might be at defensive back or receiver. Nate Romine remains in the OSU orbit but has not been offered.
Scout.com's Annabel Stephan had an article this week on quarterback Andrew Elffers out of Pasadena. Recently injured, he holds offers from UNLV, Idaho, Eastern Washington and Sacramento State, with the Beavs staying in touch.
Other than that, there's just not much QB recruiting news out there on the Beavs. Vexing, isn't it?
SO DOES Riley have another trick up his sleeve and if so, what kind of trick? Will the Beavs unearth what eventually proves to be a QB gem by going this far into the senior year? Will a bigger name at some point switch his pledge to OSU?
Given that the leaves are already falling from the trees, it could go on a while longer. Oregon State generally has their bulk of their official visitors late in leading up to February's Signing Day -- usually in November, December, January, with an emphasis on after the season.
Consider that last year, Oregon State had 14 official visitors on Jan. 20.
Could OSU actually wait until late January to get their QB? Back in the spring, ago we'd have dismissed that notion as preposterous. But we never thought we'd get to mid-October without a QB verbal either.
