Bama Stays First In Football Polls

Scott Wolf of the Los Angeles Daily News seems to have seen the light. LSU’s lethargic performance in a 12-10 win over Auburn didn’t convince Wolf to vote the Fighting Tigers down, but when LSU had to rally to down Towson State, 38-22, even Wolf was convinced.

As a result, Alabama is a unanimous number one in the Associated Press College Football Poll after week five. Bama got all 60 votes in the poll, a week after the Crimson Tide had received 59 votes – all but Wolf’s.

The Crimson Tide, 5-0 after a 33-14 win over Ole Miss Saturday night, is also number one in the Coaches Poll, but it is not unanimous. In fact, Alabama fell back a point in that poll. Bama got 57 first place votes and LSU and Florida State got one each in the Coaches Poll. One of those two coaches also voted Bama third. A week earlier Alabama had received 57 of 59 first place votes and the other two both had Alabama number two.

Nick Saban is one of the Coaches Poll voters and it is likely he is one of those who does not have Alabama number one.

Alabama has an open date this week. The Tide, 2-0 in Southeastern Conference play, returns to action on Oct. 13 against Missouri in Columbia.

Alabama opened the season ranked third (behind LSU and USC) in the AP poll and second (behind Southern Cal) in the Coaches Poll.

USC lost a game to Stanford and fell out of the top 10.

Oregon is second to Alabama in both polls.

LSU remained third in the Coaches Poll, but fell to fourth in the AP rankings. Florida State is third in AP, fourth in Coaches.

The SEC has four teams ranked in the top six. In addition to Alabama and LSU, Georgia is fifth and South Carolina sixth in both rankings. Florida is 10th in the AP rankings and 11th in the Coaches Poll.

The top six teams in both polls have 5-0 records and all in the top 11 are undefeated.

The AP top 10 is Alabama, Oregon, Florida State, LSU, Georgia, South Carolina, Kansas State, West Virginia, Notre Dame and Florida.

The coaches' top 10 is Alabama, Oregon, LSU, Florida State, Georgia, South Carolina, West Virginia, Kansas State, Texas and Notre Dame.
