No time for nostalgia

Jeremy Clark

With construction work now underway on the opposite side of the Football Complex, the Tide players' days in the present weight room are numbered. But don't expect any of the athletes to shed any tears.

(Above left) Freshman defensive tackle Jeremy Clark performs a front squat. Weighing close to 290 pounds now, Clark has added strength and bulk since arriving last fall.

Quarterback Brandon Avalos on the incline dumbbell press. After playing baseball in the spring, Avalos lost some weight but is now back in the weight room, lifting and conditioning to prepare for the fall.

Walk-on fullback Josh Smith on the flat bench press. That's Justin Smiley helping spot, Wesley Britt (middle) watching and walk-on defensive end P.J. Fletcher (far right) watching. Smith spent spring at tailback but is expected to move back to his former position of fullback this fall.

Senior middle linebacker Derrick Pope performs dumbbell raises in the mirror. Capable of playing inside or outside linebacker, Pope finished spring training in a virtual tie with Freddie Roach on the inside.

Now fully recovered from his spring illness, Nautyn McKay-Loescher is enrolled in school and working out daily with the squad. Here he works to strengthen his legs without aggravating his back on a flat squat machine.

One of several talented senior receivers, Triandos Luke works on the incline dumbbell press. Luke's 41 receptions led the 2002 squad in that category.
