O.J. Howard shines for invite

O.J. Howard, elite tight end from Prattville-Autauga Academy, Ala., had a terrific performance at the Nike Sparq training combine in Mobile. Howard had the top performance of the event and received an invitation to the national combine in this summer. He talked about the big day and much more....

"We ran the 40, did the power ball, vertical and shuttle," said O.J. Howard. "All we did was combine testing. They measured me at 6-foot-6, 224-pounds.

"I ran a 4.63-40, had a 33.2 vertical, 4.44 shuttle and 38.5 power ball. It was a lot of fun. The conditions were great. Most of the guys there were from outside the state.

"I believe I had the top overall performance (104.22 Sparq rating). I got the official invite to The Opening in Oregon July 5-8. I am really looking forward to going to it."

Howard is one of the top overall prospects in South. He gave an early commitment to the University of Alabama and also has scholarship offers from Auburn and Ole Miss.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban recently announced the offering of four-year scholarships.

"I saw Alabama is doing that now," Howard said. "I think it's a great thing. I think it's the right thing. It's something I think we all need."

Howard has taken a couple of visits to Auburn including a recent Junior Day.

"My commitment to Alabama is really solid," Howard said. "I am committed to them. Nothing has changed at all. I spoke with coach Smart on Wednesday. They wanted me to come up for the basketball game, but I had a baseball game that day."

The Tide commitment does not plan to attend the A-Day game in Tuscaloosa due to his high school prom. He does plan to attend a few spring practices at Alabama this spring.
