Julio Jones Plays Big In Loss
Posted Nov 6, 2010
Julio Jones won the battle, but Patrick Peterson won the war. The Crimson Tide’s outstanding wide receiver had a very fine day against the man considered to be the best defensive back in the nation. But LSU defeated Alabama, 24-21, in Baton Rouge Saturday.
junior wide receiver
had 10 receptions for 89 yards and a touchdown in a losing effort for Alabama against
. That moved him into second place in the Crimson Tide record book for career receptions. He now has 156 pass receptions for 2,888 yards, ranking second to
(2004-07), who had 194 catches for 2,923 yards.
With 10 catches for 89 yards, Jones has 55 catches for 758 yards this season. That ties Jones for seventh for catches in a season and moves him into ninth in receiving yards in a season.
Alabama suffered a rare loss to LSU, particularly rare in Baton Rouge. With the loss, Alabama is now 45-24-5 all-time against the Bengal Tigers. In LSU’s Tiger Stadium, the Tide still has a 24-7-2 lead. That was LSU’s first win over Bama when both teams were ranked and playing in Baton Rouge. Alabama, which was sixth in the BCS and fifth in the polls coming in, now has a 7-1-1 advantage in such games. LSU was 10th in the BCS and 11th and 12th in the major polls prior to the game.
The Alabama loss ended a streak of 12 straight wins against Southeastern Conference Western Division teams.
Even in the loss, Alabama added to its streak of consecutive games scoring 20 or more points. Bama has now accomplished that feat in 15 consecutive games going back to last season. The 1973-74 Tide had 16 consecutive games scoring 20 or more points.
There had been a thought that

had two touchdown passes against LSU, the 31st and 32nd of his career, moving him into fifth place on the Tide career touchdown passes list. He has 13 touchdown passes this season.
Although Greg McElroy threw an interception Saturday (a tipped ball in the first quarter), which ended his streak of 124 passes thrown without an interception, he still has never thrown an interception in the second half of the 23 games he has started.
Junior running back
put Alabama in front, 14-10, on a five-yard run with 2:30 remaining in the third quarter. That score gives Ingram 38 rushing touchdowns for his Alabama career, 41 touchdowns overall. He ranks second in Alabama history in rushing touchdowns and is tied for fifth in total touchdowns.
Ingram rushed for 97 yards on 21 carries against LSU, which gives him 3,027 rushing yards in his career to rank fourth in Crimson Tide history. Shaun Alexander (1996-99) is the Tide’s career rushing yards record holder.
Alabama game captains were senior quarterback Greg McElroy, junior safety
and junior wide receiver Julio Jones.
